Innovation is in the DNA of the Y
There is no organization in the world like the YMCA.
We invented basketball…and volleyball…and racquetball.
Summer camp…swim lessons…aerobics…bodybuilding…and the burpee!
The Boy Scouts, Campfire Girls, USO, Toastmasters, and Father’s Day.
We started English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for German immigrants at the Cincinnati YMCA in 1856.
We helped develop America’s public libraries.
We provided recreation and relief to U.S. soldiers across multiple conflicts and won a Nobel Peace Prize as a result.
So much has started at a YMCA.
Since 1884, the YMCA has been a part of Texas’ growth and success.
And that tradition of partnering with Texas communities, families and businesses will continue.
So many people have a “Y story,” often connected to fitness and sports. But Texas YMCAs also play a vital role in fostering economic prosperity by
serving as the state’s largest childcare provider and offering job training. In addition to our well know commitment to physical fitness, many Ys provide nutrition services and mental health counseling.
In over 700 facilities, Texas YMCAs nurture children’s development, build healthy bodies, nurture strong neighborhoods and help millions of Texans pursue their dreams.
We serve ALL people – old and young from rural communities to the suburbs to the inner-city.
We are volunteer-led, community-focused and continually evolving.
The YMCA has thrived for nearly 175 years in America and for more than a century in Texas. And why Texas YMCA will endure for generations to come.
